Are the Haikyuu Movies Canon to the Anime?

Are the Haikyuu movies canon to the anime or manga? The Haikyuu series currently has four films with more coming in the next year. But are any of these movies considered as canon? Here is a guide on whether or not the Haikyuu movies are canon.

Are the Haikyuu movies canon?

Yes, the Haikyuu movies are canon.

The Haikyuu series currently has four movies out, all of which are canon. However, these are only compilation films. This means they basically just serve as recaps of the previous seasons. These are the following Haikyuu compilation films:

  • Haikyuu!! the Movie: Ending and Beginning
  • Haikyuu!! the Movie: Winners and Losers
  • Haikyuu!! the Movie: Talent and Sense
  • Haikyuu!! the Movie: Battle of Concepts

Ending and Beginning is a recap of the first half of the first season. Meanwhile, Winners and Losers is a recap of the second half of the first season. Talent and Sense recaps the second season. Battle of Concepts is a recap of the third season.

However, the upcoming Haikyuu movies titled Haikyuu!! Final are canon. This means that there will be no season 5 of Haikyuu and instead these two films will be adapting the remaining chapters left in the manga that haven’t been animated yet. The first part of the film is subtitled as “Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump.” It was recently announced that this movie will be out in Japan on February 16, 2024.

Do I need to watch the Haikyuu movies?

It is unnecessary to watch the Haikyuu movies because they are just recaps of the series’ first three seasons. However, Talent and Sense has very minimal additional scenes on Seijoh if you want more content on them. The same goes for Battle of Concepts, there are extra scenes and more content on Shiratorizawa.

However, watching the upcoming Haikyuu!! Final movies are a must. It is canon because it will adapt the remaining chapters of the manga.
